What Exactly Is a World Surfing Reserve?

In short, it’s a program that protects waves, surf zones, and their surrounding environments. This title recognizes and safeguards key environmental, cultural, and economic aspects of a surfing area. The idea originated with Australian surfer Brad Farmer, who believed certain places held “intrinsic environmental, heritage, sporting and cultural value.”

Farmer started the “National Surfing Reserve” program in Australia in 2005. He later partnered with the Save the Waves Coalition to launch the World Surfing Reserves program in 2009. The first official reserve was Malibu, California, in October 2010. Ericeira followed soon after, becoming the second reserve worldwide and the first in Europe in October 2011.

Why Ericeira?

If you’ve ever visited, you’ll understand why this place was chosen. The Ericeira coastline is defined by its rocky cliffs and beautiful bays, and it boasts a remarkable density of incredible surf breaks. It’s home to seven world-class waves—Pedra Branca, Reef, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Cave, Crazy Left, Coxos, and São Lourenço—all within just 5 kilometers.

The diversity of these waves, ranging from powerful reef breaks to more forgiving beach breaks, offers consistent opportunities for all levels of surfers, from beginners to professionals. This rich surf culture is nothing new; since surfing arrived in the mid-1970s, Ericeira has become the heart of the Portuguese surf scene. It’s now home to numerous surf schools and hosts regional and international competitions, including the annual Quiksilver Pro Portugal at Ribeira d’Ilhas.

Beyond the waves, the area has a vibrant marine ecosystem, fueled by nutrient-rich upwellings that make these waters some of the most biodiverse in the world. The local community has a deep connection to the sea, dating back to the ancient Jagoz ethnic group who lived almost exclusively from fishing.

Protecting Our Coastline

The Ericeira World Surfing Reserve has a local stewardship council dedicated to maintaining the health of these waters and ensuring the responsible enjoyment of the coast. This means the coastline and its famous surf spots are protected from anything that could harm or change their natural environment. A fun fact: one of Ericeira’s WSR ambassadors is Portuguese surf legend Tiago Pires, who was the first Portuguese surfer to make it onto the ASP World Tour!

A Global Family of Reserves

As of 2025, a total of 13 World Surfing Reserves have been recognized, including:

Getting this title isn’t easy; the process is rigorous and detailed. So, when you visit Ericeira, you can feel confident that this special place is being protected for its exceptional surf, rich history, and vibrant community.

It’s a point of pride for everyone here, and we all play a part in protecting this incredible corner of the world.
