Nazaré’s Praia do Norte is where ocean physics turns into a show. A deep submarine trench—the Nazaré Canyon—funnels Atlantic swell toward the inner sandbar under the lighthouse; energy stacks (shoaling), two refracted wave trains often merge, and you get the towering wedges this headland is famous for.
Definitions (1-liners): Refraction = waves bend over changing depth. Shoaling = waves grow as water gets shallower.

Live Surf Forecast for Praia do Norte
How to read it (60-second refresher):
- Period (s): ≥14 s is meaningful; 16–20 s is when Nazaré often “switches on”
- Direction: W–NW lines energy into the canyon; too far N/WSW misses the focus
- Wind: NE–E grooms; strong W–SW crumbles faces
- Tide: helpful for timing, but canyon focus > tide here
